What is the oldest pub in the world?
By claim, The Old Ferry Boat Inn in Holywell claims AD 560 — but that date is tradition, not record. By documentary evidence the strongest cases sit far lower down this list: Taverne zur Krone (1259) and Jaškovská krčma (1268). The oldest pub in the world: both answers, side by side
Why is the pub with the oldest claim not the best documented?
A founding legend costs nothing to print on a sign. A record costs a licensing roll, a rental, a court entry or a tree-ring survey to prove. Only 8 of the pubs on this list have a document from at or near the date they claim; 10 have a building of the right age but a later first mention, and 82 rest on tradition.
