The claim
In the moorland village of Blanchland in Northumberland, the Lord Crewe Arms occupies buildings that once belonged to a medieval abbey. It sells itself as a 12th-century retreat, and its Crypt Bar is where locals, walkers and guests gather for a drink. There are also smart bedrooms, afternoon teas and the Bishop's Dining Room.
What the records show
The inn occupies former buildings of the Premonstratensian abbey at Blanchland, founded in 1165, so the fabric is genuinely medieval and the claim is the abbey's foundation rather than a record of drink. Historic England's list entry, read on 17 September 2026 through an archived copy of entry 1154141, is more precise than anything the page carried before: the range is the abbey's west cloister, probably the abbot's lodge, guest house and kitchen, it is 13th and 15th century, and it was remodelled in the middle of the 18th century, when the Gothick west front and the panelled hall were made. The entry describes the range as a hotel and records the Forster family living here after the Dissolution, with Thomas Forster hiding in the priest's hole after the rising of 1715 before escaping to France. CAMRA's branch entry says the house has been the village pub and hotel since the 18th century. So the fabric a reader stands in is thirteenth-century and eighteenth-century, the drinking use is Georgian, and the 1165 belongs to the abbey.
