204 dated days · 12 months
On this day in pub history
Every entry here is a day somebody wrote down: a licence granted, a deed signed, a building listed, a house burned or rebuilt or closed. Not a founding year handed down — a date with a record behind it, and the record is linked beside each one.
This page was built for 11 October 2026. It is a static site, so it shows the day it was last built for rather than the day you are reading it — the month below is always complete.

The Scotch Piper is listed
The thatched, cruck-framed Scotch Piper at Lydiate was listed at Grade II* on 11 October 1968. The inn's 1320 is tradition; CAMRA reports tree-ring dating of its timbers to the middle of the sixteenth century.

Every month
A month has a page here when it holds three or more dated days. All twelve do, between them covering 204 separate days of the calendar and 976 years, from 1050 to 2026. 156 of the 204 entries name a pub with a page on this site.
Where these dates come from
Every entry cites the record that carries the day and the month — a listing register, a licensing bench, a deed, a newspaper. A founding year is not an anniversary, so a house that says it has been trading since 1189 appears here only where something was written down on a particular day. How a date is weighed is set out on how we date a pub, and the dates that do not hold up are in myths, checked. The pubs themselves are in the Top 100 and on the map.
