The pub dates itself to 1383, the age of the monks' farm rather than of the house, which the listing puts in the early seventeenth century.
What the records show
The 1383 on the pub's own page belongs to the monastic grange at Monknash, the richest estate of the Cistercian abbey at Neath, whose barn and dovecote are separately listed a field away. The listing describes the pub itself as an early seventeenth-century lobby-entry house, extended early in the eighteenth, and the pub's own history agrees that a lobby-entry house of that kind was built after the dissolution of 1536. No record of drinking-house use in the fourteenth century has been traced.
