The claim
Overlooking Chiddingfold's village green, the Crown is a handsome timber-framed inn that traces its story to the 14th century, when pilgrims on the road between Winchester and Canterbury are said to have lodged here. The boy-king Edward VI reputedly stayed in 1552. Oak beams, sloping floors and stained glass frame its bars, restaurant and bedrooms.
