The short version
OldPubs is a static website. There is no account to create, no form that stores what you type, and no database behind the pages. We set no cookies of our own, and we do not build a profile of you. The two things that do involve third parties are advertising and visitor analytics, and both are described below.
This policy applies to oldpubs.com.
Who is responsible
OldPubs is operated by the site owner as an independent publisher. For the purposes of UK GDPR and the EU GDPR, the operator is the data controller for the limited processing described here. To exercise any right in this policy, or to ask a question about it, write to hello@oldpubs.com.
What we collect ourselves
Nothing that identifies you.
- No accounts. There is nothing to sign up for.
- No forms that send us anything. The two search boxes work inside your browser. We have no contact form, no newsletter and no comments. Corrections come by email, which means your message sits in an email inbox and nowhere else.
- No cookies of our own. Once advertising is running, Google sets its own consent and advertising cookies on this domain, which we never read — see the cookie policy.
- No fingerprinting, and no selling or sharing of personal data, because we hold none to sell.
The Pint Passport and other things kept in your browser
The Pint Passport, the “which is older?” quiz, the map filters you last chose and a note that you pressed “use my location” are stored in your own browser. That data stays on your device. It is never transmitted to us, never synchronised between your devices, and we cannot read it. Clearing your browser’s site data deletes it, and there is no copy anywhere else. The cookie policy lists each item by name.
Location
If you use “old pubs near me”, your browser asks your permission and then gives the page your approximate coordinates. Those coordinates are used in the page, on your device, to sort pubs by distance. They are not sent to us, not stored, and not passed to any third party. Refusing permission simply leaves the map where it is.
Search terms stay in your browser: the search index is a static file downloaded to your device,
and nothing you type is sent to us or to any search service. The sort and before values that
appear in the map’s address bar record which filters you chose, so that a view can be shared;
they never contain your location.
Visitor analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages are read. At the date of this policy the analytics beacon is not yet enabled, so nothing is loaded and nothing is counted. It is cookieless and sets no cross-site identifiers, and what it gives us is aggregate counts of pages, referrers, countries and device types — nothing that identifies a visitor. Like any request to any server, the beacon’s request reaches Cloudflare carrying your IP address, which Cloudflare processes under its own terms as described in Hosting and logs below; what reaches us is only the aggregate. Advertising
The site is built to carry advertising served by Google, through AdSense. At the date of this policy no advertising is running: no publisher account is configured, so no ad script and no consent script is loaded and no advertising cookie can be set from this site. When advertising is switched on, Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to serve and measure advertising, and in some configurations to personalise it.
- In the UK, the EEA and Switzerland, no advertising cookie is set until you have made a choice in the consent banner. You can withdraw or change that choice at any time, as easily as you gave it, with the Cookie settings button in the Legal column of the footer. That button is there whenever advertising is running, which is whenever there is a choice to withdraw — see the cookie policy.
- Elsewhere, ads may be personalised by default; you can opt out of personalised advertising at Google’s Ads Settings and at optout.aboutads.info, which is the Digital Advertising Alliance’s YourAdChoices tool.

We do not receive personal data from Google about you, and we cannot see who you are from an ad impression.
If you are in California
Personalised advertising counts as “sharing” under the California Consumer Privacy Act, even though no money changes hands and we never see who you are. We do not sell personal information and we never will. Once advertising is running you can turn personalised ads off for this site through the consent notice, and again through Google’s ad settings; either is a “do not sell or share” request as far as this site is concerned. A Global Privacy Control signal from your browser is honoured by Google’s consent tool. If you would rather ask us directly, write through the contact page and we will confirm what has been done.
Hosting and logs
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. As with any web host, Cloudflare processes the technical information needed to deliver a page — your IP address and request details — and uses it for security, abuse prevention and network operation. That processing is Cloudflare’s, under its own terms; see the Cloudflare privacy policy.
Content loaded from elsewhere
- Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap when you open a map. Your browser requests tiles directly, which means your IP address reaches that service, as it would with any map.
- Fonts are served from this site, not from a font network.
- Photographs are served from this site and credited to their authors.
We link out to pubs’ own websites, to sources, and to map and directions services — each trail page has a link that opens the whole walk in Google Maps. Once you follow a link, that site’s privacy policy applies, not ours.
Legal bases
Where UK or EU data protection law applies, our legal bases are: consent for advertising cookies and any personalised advertising; and legitimate interests for aggregate, cookieless analytics and for the security and delivery of the site, which we consider a minimal interference with your privacy given no personal profile is built.
How long anything is kept
We keep nothing ourselves except email you choose to send us, which is kept while a correction is being handled and then for a reasonable period as a record of what changed and why. Third-party retention is set by those third parties in the policies linked above.
Your rights
If UK or EU data protection law applies to you, you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability, and a right to withdraw consent at any time. Because we hold almost no personal data, most requests will be answered by telling you exactly that. Write to hello@oldpubs.com and we will reply.
You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority. In the UK that is the Information Commissioner’s Office; in the EU it is your national data protection authority.
Children
This site is intended for adults of legal drinking age. It is not directed at children, we do not knowingly collect data about them, and we do not target advertising at them.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it and the substance of the change is described here. The most recent change was a clarification rather than a change to what happens: it records that the Cookie settings button appears in the footer whenever advertising is running, because until then there is nothing to withdraw.
