November in pub history

14 days in November that somebody wrote down, spread across 14 dates of the month and 700 years — the earliest 3 November 1324, when petronilla de Meath, and the most recent 30 November 2024. 9 of them name a house with a page on this site.

Petronilla de Meath, maidservant to Dame Alice Kyteler, was flogged and burned at Kilkenny on 3 November 1324 while her mistress got away abroad. The medieval house that carries the Kyteler name trades as Kyteler's Inn; that Alice kept an inn in it is tradition.

The thatched Ferry Boat Inn at Holywell, on the Great Ouse, was listed at Grade II on 4 November 1982, with three of its neighbours the same day. The AD 560 on its sign is tradition; the earliest record traced of drinking here is 1841.

      Cordina opens in Valletta

Cesare Cordina opened the caffè in Valletta on 11 November 1944, in rooms he rented from the Casino Maltese after a bomb closed the family shop across the Grand Harbour. The 1837 the house prints belongs to that shop, in Cospicua.

    • 1984

      Ye Olde Swan is listed

Ye Olde Swan on the Thames bank at Thames Ditton was listed at Grade II on 16 November 1984. The register reads two early eighteenth-century houses in colourwashed brick, joined and extended in the nineteenth to make one pub; the thirteenth century is the pub's own.

The first brew at U Medvídků

U Medvídků in Prague finished the first brew of its new house brewery on 17 November 2004, a date chosen for falling exactly fifteen years after the Velvet Revolution. Brewing is recorded in the house from 1466 and had stopped in 1898.

      The market rent only vote

      The Puhoi Hotel is listed

The Puhoi Hotel and Stables were entered on the New Zealand Heritage List as a Category 2 historic place on 25 November 1982. The pub in the Bohemian settlement north of Auckland dates itself to 1879.

    • 2024

Every entry above cites the record that carries the day and the month, because a founding year is not an anniversary: a house may have been pouring since 1189 and still appear here only on the day a clerk wrote something down. The whole archive holds 204 such days across 12 months — on this day in pub history opens on whichever date the site was last built for. How a date is weighed is on how we date a pub; the ones that do not survive checking are in myths, checked.
