The claim
A thatched cob inn on the shore of Restronguet Creek, the Pandora can be reached by car or boat, and its pontoon fills on summer evenings. Once the Passage House, it was renamed after HMS Pandora, the ship sent to hunt the Bounty mutineers. Rebuilt with care after a fire in 2011, it keeps a warren of low-beamed rooms.
What the records show
The inn's own page claims the 13th century for parts of the building, and says plainly what stood here then: a small farm on the edge of Restronguet Creek. So the claimed date dates a farm rather than a drinking house, which is why the grade is C. The page gives one real record: by 1488 the Restronguet Estate Accounts put the rent at 8s 4d a year, which it calls one of the earliest written references to the place. That dates the holding, not drink sold on it, so no first record of drinking use is entered. Historic England's listing, read on 17 September 2026, calls the house an inn of about the 17th century, mostly rebuilt in the 19th and greatly extended in the 20th, of painted shale rubble under mostly wheat-reed thatch with scantle slate over the part to the south, originally probably a three-room through-passage plan, with the interior remodelled in the 20th century but keeping old ceiling beams, floorboards and clay tiles in the left-hand room. Nothing in it reaches the 13th century. It was once the Passage House, on the shortest crossing before the Truro turnpike opened in 1828, and was renamed after HMS Pandora, wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef in 1791. No source traced dates the change from farm to inn, so none is recorded.
