The claim

Beside the church in the Lizard village of Mullion, the Old Inn is a low-beamed, partly thatched house said to date from the 16th century, though its listing reads the older range as possibly late 17th-century. It remains the kind of place where walkers from the coast path share the bar with locals over darts and St Austell ales. Five bedrooms make it a handy base for Mullion Cove.

What the records show

CAMRA and the inn describe a 16th-century partly thatched house beside the church. Historic England's entry, read on 17 September 2026, reads it differently: a public house possibly of the late 17th century, with two mid-19th-century wings to the side and rear, the older part whitewashed stone rubble with a cob first floor under a thatched roof with gabled ends and eyebrow eaves, on a two-room plan with a central cross passage at right angles to the road. It records a large exposed stone fireplace with a moulded timber lintel and a cloam oven on the right of the 17th-century block, and notes that the floor beams have been renewed and the interiors entirely restructured. Nothing in it reaches the 16th century, and no licence or other record of drink sold here has been traced, so the claim stays tradition.
