The claim

In the old hamlet of Moulin above Pitlochry, the Moulin Inn has served locals for more than three centuries, traditionally since 1695. Refurbishment uncovered original stone walls and fireplaces. Ales come from the Moulin Brewery beside the hotel, and the inn has been named Scottish Pub of the Year. It is a welcoming stop in Highland Perthshire for walkers and tourists.

What the records show

The inn's current page says only that it has served locals for over three centuries; the 1695 is widely quoted elsewhere. Historic Environment Scotland's record, read on 17 September 2026, is the first outside reading of the building this page has carried. It lists the Moulin Hotel at category C, added on 5 October 1971 and revised in December 2000, and dates the oldest part — the block to the north-east, in the advanced gabled bay — to the early 18th century, remodelled later, with the angled entrance bay and the bays to the south added after 1861, an extension by the Pitlochry architect John S H Brander in 1936 and a south wing in 1971. It records the painted date 1695 and the words MOULIN INN on the rusticated porch, which is where the number in circulation comes from, and adds that trials were once held in an old meeting room above the bar. So the year is painted on the house rather than documented, and the register reads the fabric as a generation younger.
