The claim

A coaching inn on the main street of Thornhill, west of Stirling, the Lion & Unicorn advertises 'fine food and ale since 1635'. It is a proper village local, with a separate public bar and games room, a restaurant warmed by three open fires, cask ales, a beer garden and a few en-suite rooms for visitors to the Trossachs. The 1635 date is unproven.

What the records show

The 1635 is the inn's own, and CAMRA's Forth Valley branch repeats it as a date for a coaching inn without adding a record; the inn's own page on the history of Thornhill offers nothing to support it. The national designations have now been searched around the house and the absence is established rather than assumed: within two hundred metres they hold Blairhill, Norrieston Parish Church and churchyard, Norrieston House and Heatherlea, and no entry for the inn, so nothing official dates these walls. What can be said about the house today is that the bar is a real one: the branch describes a separate public bar with a large games annexe and three open fires, and the food is served in the lounge and restaurant rather than in the bar.

What to look for inside

  • Three open fires, one very large
  • Separate public bar with games annexe
