The claim
On Castle Street between the priory and the castle ruins, Ye Olde George is a timber-framed coaching inn refaced in the 18th century, which CAMRA dates to the 15th century and whose foundations are said to use stone taken from the slighted castle. Historic England's listing puts no century on the frame. Its heated cobbled courtyard is the pub's heart. It doubles as the tap for Dorset Piddle Brewery and runs quiz nights, sport and bedrooms.
What the records show
CAMRA describes a Grade II listed 15th-century coaching inn, rebuilt after the Civil War with stone said to have come from Christchurch Castle. The listing it points at has now been read, and it will not date the frame. Historic England, which listed the house on 12 February 1976 as Ye Old George Inne, Castle Street, calls it a timber-framed building refaced in the 18th century with painted brick: two storeys, three narrow first-floor sashes in moulded flush frames with late 19th-century glazing, a modillion eaves cornice and a tiled roof, a wide carriage archway through the middle of the ground floor, rear ranges east and west of a courtyard, and stone flags along the street front. It names no century for the timber frame, says nothing about castle stone, and records that the entrance door west of the archway is structurally part of No 76 High Street. The house is listed partly for group value at the crossing of the town's main streets. So the only authority for 15th-century fabric is CAMRA's description, and no early licence has been traced. A grade B says fabric of the claimed age is documented; here it is asserted rather than documented, and the grade falls to C.
