The building. Eighteenth-century rural house, now an inn: two storeys and four bays with two more added to the west, granite rubble with dressed quoins, a pair of granite stacks with thatch dripstones, and later extensions (Jersey Historic Environment Record).

The claim

Above the sandy sweep of Ouaisné Bay, this granite pub was formed from two fishermen's cottages said to date from the 13th century, and it trades on tales of pirates and smugglers landing in the bay. Original stonework, beams and fireplaces survive, a lady in black is said to haunt it, and it serves food daily.

What the records show

Visit Jersey and the pub say the house grew from two fishermen's cottages of the 13th century, and CAMRA repeats foundations reputedly of that date. Jersey's own Historic Environment Record, kept by Jersey Heritage, reads the building as Georgian: a good example of an 18th-century rural property, now an inn, of four bays and two storeys with two bays added to the west, granite rubble with dressed quoins and thatch dripstones on its stacks, and standing on the Richmond Map of 1795. The record types it a domestic coastal building and carries it as listed building BR0067. That is five centuries later than the claim, and it makes the house a home before it was an inn. When drink was first sold here is recorded nowhere we have traced.
