The claim
A converted watermill at Grève de Lecq on Jersey's north-west coast, where the huge 21-foot waterwheel still turns outside and its cogs and gearing are built into the bar. Jersey's historic environment record traces the mill's origins to the 15th century, against the 12th the house quotes; German forces used the wheel to make electricity in the Occupation. Pub food and beers are served daily.
What the records show
Jersey's Historic Environment Record, read on 17 September 2026, is the first dating of this building from anybody but the house and the island's tourism service, and it does not support the twelfth century. The record — Government of Jersey listed building OU0093, held as heritage asset 0900093 in the parish of St Ouen — calls the house a very important survival of an early water mill, gives it phases of development with fifteenth-century origins, places it in the medieval period and notes it on the Richmond Map of 1795. It describes a mill house of two storeys and three bays in random stone with a modern wing to the west, the wheel surviving outside along with leat steps made from old grinding stones, and part of the drive machinery visible inside. Visit Jersey and the house give the twelfth century; the island's own record gives the fifteenth, so the claim is contradicted rather than documented and the grade is C. The record's reading list includes Ahier and Ashworth's Historical Hotels and Inns of Jersey of 1979, which has not been read here. Nobody we can read records drink sold on the premises before the mill stopped working in 1929, so the drinking is later than the building whichever date is right. German forces requisitioned the wheel during the Occupation to power searchlights. CAMRA's Channel Islands branch carries it as a free house in the Good Beer Guide with its own Jersey-brewed pale ale.
