How old is it, really?

Locally dated 1450; no early record found; building c.1611.

Hatched: 576 years claimed with no document found yet. Diamond: the standing building, dated from its fabric to about 1611.

The claim

Overlooking St Aubin's harbour, this inn combines a merchant's house with an older court house behind, said to date from 1450. Its cellars once held privateers' plunder, and prize cargoes were divided in what is now the restaurant. A deep well, a defensive granite spiral stair and log fires add character, with ten bedrooms above.

What the records show

The 1450 is Visit Jersey's, which says the rear building, the original court house, has parts dating back to 1450. The Liberation Group, which runs the inn, claims only history dating back to the 15th century, and CAMRA's Channel Islands guide says about 400 years old. Sources disagree and no documentary date for inn use was found.
