The claim
A small locals' bar on Trinity Square, at the edge of the town centre in St Peter Port, and one of the houses the Liberation Group supplies. A founding year of 1840 circulates in visitors' accounts, but nothing published states it: CAMRA, the Brewery History Society and the Guernsey Press all record the bar without a date. The earliest record traced is its listing in local CAMRA guides between 1985 and 1990.
What the records show
The 1840 came to us from a single visitor's review of 2019, and a review is not something this site will stand a date on, so that citation has been dropped. Nothing we have been able to open states a founding year for the house. CAMRA's entry, surveyed in March 2015, describes a small locals' bar on Trinity Square and gives no date; it is absent from the branch's guide to real-ale houses because the same entry records no cask ale here, which is not a sign of closure. The Brewery History Society's list of Guernsey brewery pubs names the Britannia Inn without a year, the Liberation Group lists it among the houses it supplies without one, and the Guernsey Press archive names the bar once, in July 2020, with none either. The Priaulx Library has no article on the house and its recollections of the town do not reach Trinity Square, and the island's register of protected buildings would not load on 12 September 2026. The earliest record traced is the Brewery History Society's note that the house sold Guernsey beers between 1985 and 1990 on the authority of local CAMRA guides, which fixes it as a pub by 1985 and says nothing about how much older it is. The review also placed the house in a ranking of the island's oldest pubs, which nothing published does, and that has gone from the page with it.
