Albion House Tavern, St Peter Port

The claim

Standing hard by a church in St Peter Port, the Albion House Tavern is recorded by Guinness as the closest tavern to a church anywhere in the British Isles, and a tavern is said to have occupied the site since 1780. That makes it one of Guernsey's longest-established drinking spots, and it remains a traditional town pub.

What the records show

The 1780 is CAMRA's: both its Channel Islands branch guide and its national entry for the house say a tavern has stood on this site since that year, and no deed, licence or directory behind the date has been traced, which is why this is a C. Two other publishers reach the house. The Priaulx Library in St Peter Port has published a Guernsey woman's recollections of the 1860s, printed in the Evening Press in December 1940, which place the Albion Hotel on Church Square with dwelling houses at its west gable and a cider store beneath it — the earliest independent account of the house in trade that we have found, eighty years after the claimed date rather than at it. The Brewery History Society's list of Guernsey Brewery houses records it as Albion House, once the Kosy Korner, selling Guernsey beers in the late 1980s and held on a Liberation tenancy in 2023. Guinness is cited by CAMRA for the house being the closest tavern to a church in the British Isles, a distinction earned by a gargoyle on the Town Church.
