The claim
In the Wealden cloth town of Cranbrook, the George has been welcoming travellers for what its owners say is more than 700 years. Tradition links it with royal visits by Edward I and Elizabeth I, and for centuries it doubled as the local magistrates' court. Now refurbished by Shepherd Neame, it is Cranbrook's remaining pub, with bedrooms and a garden terrace.

The operator dates the inn to around 1300, and local tradition says Edward I visited in 1299 and Elizabeth I in 1573; these visits are not tied to documented use of this building as an inn, which also housed the town's magistrates' court until 1859.
