Claims 1420; no early record found.

Hatched: 606 years claimed with no document found yet.

The claim

Down a lane outside Biddenden, the Three Chimneys is a rambling 15th-century weatherboarded pub of nooks and small rooms where beer is still poured straight from casks racked behind the bar. The simple old drinking room contrasts with a smart restaurant and conservatory, and the gardens and bedrooms make it a Weald favourite.

What the records show

The claim is the pub's own: its history page says the building dates from circa 1420 and the home page gives it 600 years. Historic England lists the house Grade II and describes it as a cottage, now a public house: 16th-century, timber-framed and roughcast, with 18th-century alterations and extensions and a 20th-century range at the rear. That puts the walls a century later than the 15th-century date CAMRA gives and than the 1420 that circulates, and it has the building starting as a cottage rather than an inn. No record of drink being sold here has been traced, and the listing gives no date for the change of use.

What to look for inside

  • Beer dispensed from ground-level stillage
  • House ale brewed by Goacher's
  • Simple matchboarded original drinking room
