The claim
The village pub in National Trust Lacock, with a wide stone hearth, low beams and a dog wheel by the fire that once turned the spit. Wadworth beers, a long food menu and a garden behind. Film crews use the street outside often, which the bar takes in its stride.
What the records show
The George presents itself as a 14th-century pub, and CAMRA repeats the date. Historic England lists it as an inn of C16 or earlier date, timber-framed and rubble-stone with a cross wing to the street and an early C19 ashlar range alongside. The county record does not agree with the national one. The Wiltshire and Swindon Historic Environment Record carries the house as monument MWI34179, The George Inn, Lacock, typed as an inn and a timber-framed building, and assigns it to the medieval period; it records a coach house to the rear as MWI72598, and refers anyone wanting detail to the listed building description and to the Wiltshire Buildings Record, which we have not read. The HER's period is a classification and not a dated survey - medieval runs from the Conquest to the 1540s, so it does not reach 1300 by itself - but it does mean one register reads this fabric as earlier than the other, and the reader should know that before deciding what to make of the 14th century. The National Trust, which owns Lacock village and the freehold, and Wadworth, which runs the bar, both trade on the older figure. No record of drinking here before the 16th century has been traced.
