The claim

Overlooking the church in the Wye Valley village of Trellech, the Lion says it was built in 1580 as a coaching inn, brewhouse and smallholding; Cadw dates the house to about 1700 and lists it as an early 18th-century village inn. The oldest part, the Lion's Den, has low ceilings, exposed beams and an open fire. It is known for real ale, cider and perry festivals.

What the records show

The pub says it was built in 1580 as a coaching inn, brewhouse and smallholding. Cadw's full report, read on 17 September 2026, dates the house to probably about 1700, allowing that it could fall either side of that, with a rear outshut of about 1800 and a second from the late 20th century when the house was refurbished. It describes red sandstone rubble under Welsh slate, a two-storey and garret central-entry plan one room deep with the stair at the back, and a ground floor since opened out into one bar space with the line of the central passage still readable. Cadw designated it on 28 February 2001 as a good early 18th-century village inn and for its group value at the centre of Trellech. So the register reads the house as a generation or two younger than the pub's own date, and nothing traced records drink sold here in 1580.
