The claim
A jettied, half-timbered inn facing the market square and the old market hall, with a flagged public bar, a long settle by the inglenook and handpumps fixed to the wall where no counter used to be. Cider country: Herefordshire perry and ale, a stone-floored hall and rooms upstairs. Closed on Tuesdays.
What the records show
Pembridge's own historians trace the New Inn to 1311, when it is said to have begun as a farmhouse, and tell of the treaty of 1461 that put Edward IV on the throne being ratified inside after the battle of Mortimer's Cross. Historic England describes a C17 timber-framed house, later a public house, with an H-plan front to the market square, and CAMRA calls it a fine 17th-century half-timbered building. So the record and the claim are three centuries apart. CAMRA rates the interior of very special national interest for its long settle, inglenook and pair of wall-mounted handpumps.
