The claim
A jettied, close-studded front on Church Street, opposite the abbey, with a row of blocked medieval arches in the wall and small rooms behind. CAMRA rates the interior nationally important even after a 1993 refit. It has closed and reopened in recent years, most recently under new tenants, with pies, roasts and a garden.
What the records show
The Green Dragon puts 1310 on its sign and its website. Historic England lists the building Grade II* as substantially mid-C15 and, from the arcade of pointed arches in the front wall, thinks it began as a shop. Norfolk pub historians note that 1317 is the earliest date anyone gives, that others read the fabric as late C14 or mid C15, and that its use as a pub is traceable from the 16th century. The house survived the fire that took some three hundred Wymondham buildings in 1615.
