The claim

Facing the green in a quiet village below the North Downs, the Angel is said to date from around 1350 and to be Addington's oldest building. Its position close to the Pilgrims' Way suggests travellers have long called in. Today it is a comfortable country inn with beams, fires, a separate Stables restaurant and two guest rooms.

What the records show

The 1350 is KentOnline's, in a 2021 survey of Kent's oldest pubs, which says the Angel was a hostelry as long ago as 1350 without naming a record. The pub's own site and CAMRA's Kent branch both say only that the building is 14th-century and the oldest in the village. No documentary evidence of early use as an inn has been published.

What to look for inside

  • Said to be the oldest building in Addington
  • Close to the Pilgrims' Way to Canterbury
  • Designated an Asset of Community Value
