The claim

A timber roadside tavern in the Żywiec Beskids, the Stara Karczma is often described as Poland's oldest working inn. A ceiling beam carved with the year 1774 gives firm ground; local legend adds a royal visit by King Jan Kazimierz in 1655. Its dark wooden rooms now serve regional food and drink on the Silesian wooden architecture trail.

What the records show

The 1655 comes from the Polish travel press, which relays the tradition that King Jan II Kazimierz sheltered here while fleeing the Swedes, and notes in the same breath that the only date on the building is 1774, carved into one of the oldest ceiling beams, and that even that may record a repair rather than the build. The Silesian heritage listing reads the inn as 18th-century, possibly earlier and raised by Wallachian settlers. It is often called Poland's oldest still-operating karczma; it may originally have been a forester's lodge.
