The claim
The house calls itself Pest's oldest restaurant, and trades in the Péterffy palace, a baroque corner house on what is now Piarista utca. Hasslinger's inn, At the City of Buda, opened here in 1831; the Kris family ran it as the White Ship from 1864, and the centenary in 1931 gave the house both its present name, Hundred Years, and the carved serving counter, Transylvanian stove and painted rooms that are protected today.
What the records show
The Budapest Lexicon, summarised in Hungarian Wikipedia's account of the Péterffy palace, says tradition puts an eating house in the building in the second half of the eighteenth century and that Hasslinger's inn, At the City of Buda, certainly opened here in 1831. The Kris family held it for seventy-seven years from 1864, trading first as the White Ship and then under their own name, and the present name was taken at the centenary in 1931, when the rooms were refitted with the carved serving counter, Transylvanian stove and music box that carry applied-art protection. The house's own pages call it the oldest restaurant in Pest and date its opening as an inn to 1831. The national monument register lists the palace under number 15429, describes it as the work of András Mayerhoffer and dates it 1744, where the Budapest Lexicon has János Péterffy beginning it in 1755. Nobody publishes whether a drink is served at that counter without a meal, so the protected counter is the whole of the evidence for a yes.
