Kafana Lončić, Sombor

The claim

A low roadside kafana on the way out of Sombor towards Čonoplja, opened in 1884 and held by one family ever since. Farmers coming in to market left their horses and carts in the yard and waited here for their wives; the counter, the checked cloths and the tables are much as they were, and the regulars still play chess, dominoes and cards over a drink.

What the records show

Radio-Television Vojvodina, the province's public broadcaster, reported in December 2017 that Sombor's oldest kafana has worked without a break since 1884, shutting only briefly when the occupying army entered the town in 1941, and that it has been in one family the whole time; the first keepers were Bogoljub Hiđoš and his wife Eržebet, and Aleksandar Katić had it at the time of writing. Serbian Wikipedia gives the same year and the address on Miloša Obilića. Nothing documentary has been read behind 1884, so this is a C. It was a stopping place for farmers coming in from the outlying homesteads to the market, who left their horses and carts in the yard; the counter, the checked tablecloths and the shape of the glasses are described as unchanged, and the regulars play chess, dominoes and cards. OpenStreetMap records it as a pub. Its trade has not been confirmed since that reporting, so the page says so. Serbia's register of immovable cultural property was read for the whole municipality on 18 September 2026 and this house is not in it. The register returns 38 entries for Sombor — 36 monuments, one site of note and two protected urban areas — and none is the kafana or any address on Miloša Obilića. It does list plain town houses by street and number, which is the control: five in Kralja Petra I, the street the register still calls Maršala Tita, at numbers 2, 8, 9, 10 and 19, one at Venac Stepe Stepanovića 22 and one at Trg oslobođenja 6, dated between the first half of the nineteenth century and 1912. The two protected areas are the old core, Venac, entered in the central register on 30 December 1997 under a protection decision of 19 June 1969, and the square Trg bratstva i jedinstva; both name the central streets they take in and neither includes Miloša Obilića, which runs out of the town. What a second publisher does give is the trade around the claimed year. Milan Stepanović's survey of Sombor's old inns on the Vojvodina history site Ravnoplov works from the town's own records: Evliya Çelebi found two hans here in 1665; the chamber administration let Martin Lipković raise a beerhouse on the ruins of the Turkish bath in 1699; the charter of the free royal city took the licensing of inns into the town's own hands in 1749; 34 innkeepers petitioned against their tax in 1851; and in 1884, the year this house gives for its opening, 137 Sombor men are recorded as holding an inn-keeper's business, with nearly every street in the town carrying one or two. The Lončić is among the inns that survey names between 1785 and the Second World War, and a photograph caption there calls it a Sombor kafana that has gone on without a break for 135 years. None of that is a document for 1884, so the grade stays C, but it is the first independent sight of the house in print and it sets the claim in a town where inns were counted.
