The claim

A Kraków kawiarnia on Floriańska, opened in 1895 as the Cukiernia Lwowska by a confectioner from Lwów and known ever since by the nickname of his windowless back room. The literary cabaret Zielony Balonik met here from 1905 to 1912, and the room added in 1910 keeps its stage, its glass roof and the stained glass drawn for it by Karol Frycz and Henryk Uziembło. What the records show

The 1895 is the house's own — "rok założenia 1895" stands at the top of its website — and the City of Kraków's official service says what that year dates: the premises opened as the Cukiernia Lwowska, founded by Jan Apolinary Michalik, which is a confectioner's shop and not a drinking house. The same page dates the literary cabaret Zielony Balonik here from 1905 to 1912, and the enlargement of 1910, when a room with a stage was built under a glass roof and Karol Frycz and Henryk Uziembło designed its stained glass. Nothing traced names a year for when drink began to be sold over the counter, which is why no earlier record is shown and why the house sits outside the ranking of pubs that have poured continuously. The building is protected, which this page had not established: the Małopolska Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments publishes the Kraków section of the national register as a list, and its issue of June 2024 carries ul. Floriańska 45 under the number A-59 as the Jama Michalika tenement, entered on 21 July 1971 and replacing an earlier decision of 15 July 1930. The conservator names the building by the café in it, and the decision it supersedes is older than the cabaret's fame. Whether a member of the public may be served a drink without a meal is answered here, in words, which is more than most continental houses of this kind manage: a Kraków visitor guide tells readers to drop in for a drink at the bar and take a look at the room, and the house's own English page offers traditional Polish alcohols beside the cakes and the old Polish cooking. Thinner is the proof that the door opened this week. The house's own site was answering on 17 September 2026 but publishes nothing dated later than a New Year's Eve poster of November 2025, under a footer that still reads 2024; the Kraków Festival Bureau's visitor portal publishes hours from nine in the morning to ten or eleven at night without dating them; and OpenStreetMap's survey of the door, which has it as a café, is from 3 August 2024. So the page says believed trading, and a check belongs on it in the next status pass.
