The claim
A low room off Kongens Nytorv, in the ground floor of a house built in 1767, where it began as the tap room next door to the Grand Café and traded under its street number as Café nr. 4. It dates itself to 1728, thirty-nine years before the building. The cab drivers who waited at the square in leather over-trousers gave it the name it has carried officially since 1930. It does not book tables for drinkers.
What the records show
The house dates itself to 1728 and says it began as the tap room of the Grand Café next door, called Café nr. 4 after the street number, and that it has held the ground floor of the building since that building went up. Danish Wikipedia's article on Lille Kongensgade records the same, adding that the nickname came from the cab drivers who waited at Kongens Nytorv in leather over-trousers, and that it became the official name in 1930. The building itself has now been read. Indenforvoldene.dk, which catalogues the properties inside the old ramparts and cites the National Museum's survey Historiske huse i det gamle København of 1972, dates Lille Kongensgade 4 to 1767 and records the property as listed in 1964; it says drink has been served on the spot since 1728 and that the place was known as Droskekælderen, the cab drivers' cellar, until 1930. So the 1728 belongs to the trade and not to the walls, which are thirty-nine years younger, and still nothing documentary has been read behind the year: this stays a C. The question this site asks of a house today is answered here in the owner's own words: tables are not reserved for drinking guests, who are told they are always welcome to look in. It opens at eleven every day but Sunday and Monday, and stays open to two on Friday and Saturday.
