The claim
Down a few steps from Kongens Nytorv, Copenhagen's oldest vinstue has welcomed drinkers since 1723 by its own account, back when nearby Nyhavn was a working harbour. The house above the cellar was built in 1767 and nobody has produced a record for the 1723. The low, panelled rooms have barely changed in character, and although the name promises wine, this is in practice a Danish cellar bar where beer and schnapps are poured as readily.
What the records show
Hviids dates itself to 1723 and says its rooms are nearly three hundred years old. The date is repeated everywhere in Copenhagen and nobody who repeats it points at a document; the fullest version, that a pair of French wine merchants were selling here outside the guild and that the trade was made lawful in 1723, is told without a source. What has now been read is the house. Indenforvoldene.dk, which catalogues every property inside the old ramparts and cites the National Museum's survey Historiske huse i det gamle København of 1972, dates the corner building at Kongens Nytorv 19 to 1767, with its fourth storey added in 1801, and records the property as listed in 1964. That is forty-four years after the year over the door. Whether the cellar the vinstue occupies survives from an earlier house on the plot is not something any source we have read states either way, so the fabric is not documented at the claimed date and no record of drinking at it has been traced: this is a C, not a B. Despite the name, it works as a traditional cellar bar and serves beer as well as wine.
