The claim
A one-room beer hall on Kungstorget, open since the last day of August 1900 and the last of the fourteen beer halls and wine rooms that once ringed the square. Beer is all it sells: a former county governor gave it leave to serve drink without food, and it pours beer and nothing else. Bentwood chairs, marble tables and dark panelling were put back to the old pattern after a fire in 1996.
What the records show
The 1900 is not the house's own account but a printed one. Swedish Wikipedia, following a 1994 history of the beer hall by Andersson and Larsson, gives the opening as Monday 31 August 1900, in the new shop block at the corner of the square, and names the founder: August Andersson, who had waited at another Gothenburg inn on Basargatan. His widow Alida ran it from his death in 1913 until she retired in 1941, their son and then their grandson after her, and it left the family in 1981. Göteborg & Co, the city's own municipal visitor company, dates the house to 1900 as well, and answers the other question this page has to ask: a former county governor gave the beer hall leave to serve beer without serving food, which makes it the one house in the city selling drink and nothing else. OpenStreetMap records it as a pub and was surveyed on 8 May 2026. The building is older than the trade - a shop of 1850 by Victor von Gegerfelt, its front remodelled in 1864 and glazed to the square in 1899-1900 - and the panelling, counter and serving cupboard were rebuilt to the old pattern, from an old photograph, after a fire in 1996. No licensing record of 1900 has been read: the year rests on the printed history and on the city's account of it.
