The claim
A time-worn bar-restaurant opposite the old Desamparados railway station in Lima's historic centre, opened by Genoese immigrants in 1905, first as a bazaar and then a salon. Mud walls and worn granite floors frame three rooms seating around 150. Owned by its staff since 1978, it was declared part of Peru's cultural heritage in 1989.
What the records show
The 1905 is the Lima press's: Infobae's survey of the city's historic bars dates the Cordano from 1905, and Spanish Wikipedia has the house founded on 13 January 1905 by the Genoese Vigilio Botano with the brothers Luis and Antonio Cordano, first as a bazaar and only later as a salón-restaurante. The 1905 record is therefore a shop, and none of the sources consulted dates the change to a bar. The staff have owned the business since 1978 and Peru declared the premises part of the nation's cultural heritage in 1989. The trading was checked on 18 September 2026: the Lima daily Trome reported on 13 January 2026 that the Cordano had reached 121 years in full trade, on the corner of Áncash and Carabaya beside the Government Palace, and the city of Lima's own visitor service publishes its hours as eight in the morning until half past eight at night, every day of the week.
