The building. Timber-framed with close-set studs and brick infill on a stone base, probably late C15 to early C16, with C18 brick wings — we give it no single date because Historic England gives probably late C15 to early C16 without a year.

Hatched: 541 years claimed with no document found yet.

The claim

A three-storey timber-framed coaching inn on Tutbury's High Street below the castle, its upper floor oversailing the pavement and C18 brick wings on either side. Chef & Brewer runs it as a pub with rooms, open from seven in the morning for breakfast, with fires, beams and a long food menu.

What the records show

This is a pub that undersells itself. Neither its own pages nor its pub company make an age claim, but Historic England lists it Grade II* as originally a coaching inn, probably of late C15 to early C16 date, timber-framed with close studding on a stone base and C18 brick wings; CAMRA calls it a Tudor coaching inn. Fabric of the claimed age is documented and the building was an inn from the start, so the grade is B. Historic England's map service dates the listing: entry 1188498, grade II*, first designated on 17 September 1952 and amended on 26 April 1984, under the name Dog and Partridge Hotel. What is not yet traced is a licence, a court roll or a rental naming a house of drink here.

What to look for inside

  • Listed Grade II* as originally a coaching inn
  • Three storeys with a jettied first floor and attic
  • Below Tutbury Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was held
