The building. 17th-century origin; substantially rebuilt and enlarged in 1766, the date on a rainwater head lettered TIB 1766 (Cadw). Only a stair survives of the earlier house.

The claim

A historic inn on Beaumaris's Castle Street that dates itself to 1472. Tradition makes it a headquarters during the English Civil War, an early Quaker meeting place and a stopping point for Charles Dickens. It later expanded into hotel rooms and restaurants alongside its bar. Opening details should be checked, as its web presence looked out of date.

What the records show

Cadw listed the inn Grade II* on 23 September 1950 and dates it to the seventeenth century, recording a painted sign that once carried 1617, a rebuilding and enlargement in 1766 lettered on a rainwater head, and only a stair surviving from the earlier house; the plan the building has now is on the town plan of 1829. The 1472 is published by Visit Wales, not by the house: the Inn Collection Group, which has run the inn since the sale reported by North Wales Live, dates it to the fifteenth century without naming a year, and a 2009 beer blog gives 1645. CAMRA carries it as open and calls it a seventeenth- or eighteenth-century coaching inn.
