Casa Pedro, Madrid — claims 1702

The claim

A mesón on the old road north, in Fuencarral, a village since swallowed by Madrid, which dates itself to 1702 and has stayed in one family. Madrid's tourism service says the house is not documented until 1825, and the papers that would show more are said to have been lost in the Civil War. Since 2025 the family has disputed the Guinness record held by Botín, on the strength of a cadastral entry of 1750. Casquería, roasts, a brick wine cellar and a counter inside the door.

What the records show

The 1702 is the family's own, and the paper that would carry it is said to have been lost in the Civil War. Two Madrid accounts put the first written record a century and a quarter later: the City of Madrid's tourism service says the house was founded in 1702 "although it is not documented until 1825", and the Academia Madrileña de Gastronomía says the first written evidence of Casa Pedro's existence is from 1825 and that what came before it was destroyed in the war. Neither says what the 1825 document is, so the record here dates the house and not a licence. Since 2025 the family has publicly disputed the Guinness record held by Botín, and the press is narrower than the headlines: Infobae reported in July 2025 that the research was done by the husband of the present manager, and that what he found is an entry in the Catastro del Marqués de la Ensenada of 1750 naming three mesones in the village of Fuencarral, one of them kept by a Juan López said to be an ancestor — a documented inn in 1750 whose tie to this family is the family's own reading. El Español reported the same hunt in June 2025: a hundred years traced and forty-eight more wanted to reach 1702. That cadastral entry could not be checked here. Spain's national archives portal was searched on 12 September 2026 and holds no description of an inn or mesón at Fuencarral, and the Ministry of Culture's own site for the Respuestas Generales of the Ensenada — the volumes the 1750 entry would be in — answered every query that day with a database error. So the 1750 stays where the press left it, as a reading nobody outside the family has published. Whether a member of the public can be served a drink here without a meal is not stated in words by anything traced, which is why the question stays on the row. What is recorded is the fitting. The Academia describes the house working, before the 1950s, with a big counter and one small room that served as the dining room; Libertad Digital, writing in February 2026, says the space still has a bar at the entrance; and Infobae has the early trade resting on Garnacha and Moscatel sold to travellers. Against that, the city's tourism service classes the house as a restaurant and describes a brick wine cellar, a terrace and private dining rooms, with hours from one in the afternoon to half past eleven at night, and OpenStreetMap tags it amenity=restaurant. Its own site, casapedro.com, did not resolve at all when it was tried on 12 September 2026.
