Casa Alberto, Madrid — claims 1827

The claim

A red-fronted taberna in the Barrio de las Letras which dates itself to 1827, with an onyx counter, a font of five taps and a nineteenth-century till standing on the bar. Vermouth drawn from the tap is what people come in for, served at the counter with an olive and no meal attached, and a small dining room behind cooks Madrid dishes. The plot is the one Cervantes is said to have lodged on.

What the records show

The 1827 is the house's own and the city repeats it. Casa Alberto's history page gives the year and says a plaque at the door, put up by Madrid city council, carries it; the city's own tourism service prints the same date. Neither points at a licence, a deed or a directory entry, and none was traced, so the year is a claim with a municipal plaque behind it rather than a record. The house's own account of a mid-sixteenth-century building on the plot, in which Cervantes lodged, is about a predecessor rather than the standing walls, and we have not traced a date for those. What is documented is the later history, which is the part that made the room: the tavern was run through the nineteenth century by families from northern Segovia, the Sanz, the Pesquera and the de Dios in turn; Alberto de Dios joined the staff in 1915, took the business on in 1924 and remodelled it into what stands now, and it was he who made vermouth the thing the place is known for. Drink without a meal is not in doubt. The house publishes separate hours for its two trades, the taberna from noon to eleven and the restaurant in two sittings inside them, and the counter is an onyx slab with a five-tap font, a seltz saturator and a nineteenth-century till still on it. A register was read for this house on 18 September 2026 and it is the city's own. Madrid's catalogue of protected elements, published with the 1997 revision of the General Plan, has two entries here: the building, 04146 in the Calle de las Huertas, protected at the level the plan calls Parcial with conditions in a record of its own, and the premises inside it, 04146-01, in the catalogue's separate list of protected commercial establishments, printed as Casa Alberto Restaurante at Nivel 1. Nothing in that catalogue dates anything — each line is a code, a street, a name and a level, and no year anywhere — so the 1827 is untouched by it and the grade stays as it was. What it does establish is that the room is protected and not only the wall round it, which is what that list is for: the same pages carry Sobrino de Botín in the Calle de Cuchilleros, the Antigua Pastelería del Pozo, Capas Seseña and the Taberna Los Gabrieles, and on this street alone the Café Bar Milano, the Librería La Celestina and the Café Popular, which is the control that a house of this kind in this street would have been found. The weakness is the door number: the page Casa Alberto appears on prints no numbers at all, where other pages of the same list do, so the entry is identified by name and street. Spain's other reading is still out of reach — the National Library's newspaper library answers a security challenge rather than a page — so nothing has been read behind the year itself.
