The claim
A Belle Époque cantina on Avenida 5 de Mayo, all gilded ceilings, carved booths and a walnut bar said to come from New Orleans. Founded in 1876 as a French pastry shop, it moved here in 1895. Porfirio Díaz, Octavio Paz and Gabriel García Márquez came through, and a hole in the ceiling is said to be from Pancho Villa's pistol.
What the records show
Three accounts agree on the sequence and not one of them points at a document. The house says it opened in 1876 as a French pastry shop at another address and moved to 5 de Mayo in 1895 as a cantina. Mexico City's own visitor service says the same: an exclusive pastry shop run by the French Boulangeot sisters, which gave up desserts on moving in 1895 to become the most sumptuous bar in the capital. Excélsior adds the two corners — San Juan de Letrán and Avenida Juárez first, where the Torre Latinoamericana now stands, then 5 de Mayo and Filomeno Mata — and says openly that it is working from what has been handed down rather than from archives. So the year the house is known by dates a confectioner's counter and not a drinking house, which is why the grade is C and why the house sits outside the ranking of pubs that have poured continuously: the drink begins in 1895, on the same untested account. The bullet hole in the ceiling attributed to Pancho Villa in 1914 is told the same way, and Excélsior notes that historians have questioned it.
