The claim
A German beer garden a few blocks from the Texas Capitol, opened by immigrant August Scholz in 1866 and owned by the Austin Saengerrunde singing society since 1914. Politicians, students and Longhorns fans gather under the trees. Behind it, the Saengerrunde hall has one of the oldest working bowling alleys in the country.
What the records show
German immigrant August Scholz opened Scholz's Hall here in 1866, accepted by the Texas Historical Commission and NRHP. The Texas marker states the current main building replaced the original around 1900, so the business is older than the fabric.
