The claim

A classic San Telmo corner bar founded in 1864 as a neighbourhood almacén, one of Buenos Aires' officially recognised bares notables. It later moved into its present Italianate corner building, whose early-1900s interior survives largely intact, and it has served as a set for period films. It remains a meeting place for locals and visitors exploring the historic quarter.

What the records show

The 1864 is the Buenos Aires press's, not the bar's, which publishes nothing a reader can open. La Nación writes that El Federal was born as a pulpería in 1864 on two dirt streets at the corner of Perú and Carlos Calvo, and Perfil, marking 160 years in 2024, has it opening that year and passing from pulpería to almacén de ramos generales before settling into the bar it is now. A pulpería sold drink across a counter, which is why the year is treated as a drinking-house date rather than a shop's. The city's own guide to its bares notables, which gives years for other houses, says only that El Federal is of the 19th century. The corner building it later moved into is late 19th-century Italianate and its interior early 20th. The doors were checked on 18 September 2026 and the answer is a day old: La Nación, writing on the 17th, lists El Federal among the houses opening late for the fifth Noche de los Bares Notables on 24 September 2026, the city's own circuit of its protected bars, and the Buenos Aires tourism service publishes the corner as a working bar.
