The claim
Prague's celebrated brewpub has been brewing its dark 13° lager on the same New Town site since at least 1499. Eight panelled halls and a leafy courtyard fill with long tables and accordion music, and waiters come round offering the house herb liqueur as well as beer. It is unashamedly busy, yet the beer, brewed only for the house, remains excellent.
What the records show
The house on Křemenec is first named in writing in 1430, when it belonged to a dyer called Petr. The 1499 the brewery gives is the year Vít Skřemenec and his wife Dorota bought the house called At the Two Magpies and began the malting trade in it — a maltster's purchase rather than a tavern licence, which is the house's own wording on its own history page. Brewing has gone on here since, the dark 13-degree lager from 1843, and the name from Jakub Flekovský, who bought the business in 1762. The state took it in 1949; the Brtník family, who had owned it since 1920, got the restaurant back in 1991 and the brewery a year later, and founded the brewing museum in 1999 for the five-hundredth anniversary.
