Cantina Do Mori, Venice

The claim

A bacaro a few steps from the Rialto, with doors on two different lanes, copper pans hung from a low ceiling and barely a chair in the place. Wine is poured by the glass at a wooden counter and drunk standing, with cicchetti from the bar: salt cod on polenta, sardines in saor, and tramezzini cut so small that Venetians call them postage stamps.

What the records show

The 1462 date is one the Italian food press uses rather than one we can show the bacaro making: Caterina Vianello gave it in her review for Dissapore in October 2019, under a headline that hedges — the oldest bacaro, so it seems — and Paesi del Gusto repeated it in July 2025. We found no document behind it, and no page published by the business itself; the bar has no website we could trace. Both accounts also say the premises began as a wine cellar serving nearby convents and that counter trade in wine and cicchetti came to the fore only in the last century, so unbroken use as a drinking house since 1462 is not established either. The Casanova story is repeated everywhere and evidenced nowhere.
