The claim

Maastricht's self-styled oldest café sits on the Boschstraat near the old river gate, marked by a carved gable stone of a rosary. Inside it is a snug, wood-lined local where Limburg dialect flows as freely as the beer. The door says 1486; a local historian's research pushed the claim back to 1466.

What the records show

The café long used 1486 (painted on the door); local amateur historian Jef Moers argued it was serving drinks 20 years earlier, so it now claims 1466. The archival basis for either date has not been published in the sources checked. Two Dutch state registers date the building instead of the drinking: the national monuments register, which has the house as a protected monument and dates its cornice façade to the early 18th century, and the register of addresses and buildings, which gives the premises at Boschstraat 109 a construction year of 1733 and records the building in use today under an assembly function alongside a dwelling. Both put the fabric nearly three centuries after the year the café claims.
