The Plough Inn, St Peter Port

What happened

The Plough stood in Vauvert, the road that climbs out of St Peter Port above the harbour, and it opened as a public house in 1810. That date is repeated everywhere on the island and rests on no document anyone has published, but nothing older is claimed in Guernsey, so the Plough carried the title of the island’s oldest pub and, as the Guernsey Press put it, its oldest pub outside Town. It was a small house: a bar and kitchen on the ground floor, a one-bedroom flat above, a few tables outside. Its tenant stopped trading on 1 July 2025 and the doors have not opened since. Liberation Group, which owns it, said in December 2025 that it was focused on finding a new operator so the pub could reopen as soon as possible. Six months later the company put the freehold on the market instead, at offers over £350,000, and the agents noted that subject to planning permission it could be converted into a home. That is the sentence that turns a closure into a loss.

What is there now

Empty and for sale. Liberation Group listed the freehold in June 2026 at offers over £350,000 — ground-floor pub and kitchen, a single-bedroom flat above — and the agents suggest it could become a house if planning permission allows. No new licensee has been announced, and until the building changes hands the outcome is open: it could pour again.
