What happened
The house at Steindlgasse 4 stands in a lane the arrow-makers once worked, and the city of Vienna's own history wiki traces it in writing to 1406. A gilded dragon over the door carries the year 1566, which an inscription inside gives as the date of the building in its present form, when it was the House of the Golden Dragon. That is the year the inn counted from, and the reason its last winter was reported as its four hundred and fifty-ninth. It sold beer under a string of names, trading as the Pilsner Bierklinik until 1922, and took the name Vienna knew it by when the Gösser brewery bought the house at the end of 1923. Bombs took much of it in 1944 and it was put back at once, the first house in the Inner City to be restored. Hieronymus Kos held the tenancy from 1988. The doors shut on 6 January 2025 with no announcement; the district paper could not reach him and no reason has been given since. What 1566 dates is the fabric and the dragon. No record of drink sold on those premises that early was traced for this entry.
What is there now
An empty room in a protected house. The building is under monument protection and still stands in the lane off the Graben, and no successor at the address has been reported in the twenty months since the padlock went on: a search of Austrian news made on 20 September 2026 found nothing later than the closure itself. The inn's own web address now serves a sports-betting page, which is why it is not among the sources here.
