What happened

Sławków is a small town between Katowice and Kraków, and the low building on the corner of its market square is entered in the Polish national register of monuments as the former inn Austeria, dated 1771. The town calls it 1781 and the register does not agree; neither figure has a document behind it that we have read. What the register does settle is that this was built as an inn rather than converted into one, which is the distinction that matters here and the reason the town can call it the oldest karczma in Poland without much argument. The town owns the building, and that is how it stopped pouring. The tenant gave the business up in the autumn of 2020 and the house closed on 1 November, which the town announced later that month with the epidemic among the reasons; the lease then went to tender again and again, and by October 2022 the asking rent had fallen from 13.35 złoty a square metre to 5.94, Ślązag reporting that day that yet another tender was closing. It was taken. A contract was signed on 21 November 2022, and the town announced on 20 June 2023 that the Austeria had opened again on Friday 9 June, let by tender for five years to Daniela Sabuda, the mayor speaking of trade returning to the building on Rynek 2 after the uncertainty of the pandemic. A Restauracja Austeria ran a website from 2023 with opening hours seven days a week, somebody added a point named Austeria to the map in July 2024, and then the website stopped resolving and the domain began serving gambling spam. The town has advertised no tender since. What nobody publishes is whether a person can walk in and be served a drink without eating, which is the question this site asks of every house, so the Austeria waits here rather than standing among the houses still pouring — not as a house recorded shut, because nothing published says it has shut.

What is there now

A restaurant, on the town's word rather than on a map. The town of Sławków, which owns the building, announced on 20 June 2023 that the Austeria had reopened on 9 June that year under a five-year lease to Daniela Sabuda, and has advertised no tender since, though a tender has followed every other tenancy that ended here. The website the business ran from 2023 no longer resolves and the domain serves gambling spam; the only map record is a point somebody added in July 2024 and nobody has revisited. The building stands on the market square and is a registered monument. Whether the public can be served a drink there without a meal is the question that decides whether this belongs in the archive at all, and no source we have read answers it.
