The claim

A granite-village pub on Castle Street in Dalkey, south of Dublin, which tells its customers it has been serving since 1745. It shut early in 2025 for a sale and a refit and reopened that July under Doherty Hospitality, with a bakery of its own, seafood from Irish suppliers and a music programme. The state's register of licences lists a full public-house licence at the door, renewed for 2025 and 2026.

What the records show

The 1745 is the house's own. Its earlier website told customers it had been serving the community since that year, and the Dublin press repeats it — 98FM, reporting the reopening on 16 July 2025, has the pub first opening its doors in 1745. No document for the year has been traced: no licensing record, no deed and no map, so the claim stands as tradition and the grade is C until somebody reads the Dublin licensing registers for Castle Street. What is documented is the present. The Revenue Commissioners' register of liquor licences renewed for 2025/2026, in a workbook saved on 2 September 2026, lists a Publican's Licence (7-Day Ordinary) at 12 Castle Street, Dalkey, reference S0314, held by Glebe Taverns Limited — a full public-house licence rather than a wine or restaurant licence, which is what settles that a drink may be had here without a meal. The pub's own site, copyright 2026, publishes hours from nine in the morning to half past eleven at night, and to half past midnight on Friday and Saturday, and describes the house as reimagined under Doherty Hospitality with a bakery of its own. One thing to know about the record rather than the pub: it shut early in 2025 for a sale and a refit and reopened that July, and OpenStreetMap still carries the door as a disused pub from a survey on 10 January 2025, which is the January before it reopened.
