The '76 House claims 1668. The records say 1756.

The building. Stone, four rooms to a floor — the description printed in a New York Gazette advertisement of 26 February 1776 and quoted in Frank B. Green's county history of 1886. The house is usually dated 1754; Green has Casparus Mabie buying the place from Cornelius Meyers in 1753 rather than building it, and calls it the first tavern in the territory of the present Orange and Rockland counties south of Newburgh, which would make the building older than Mabie's tenure.

The claim

A Dutch-colonial stone house on Tappan's Main Street, a home with a tavern corner, usually dated 1754 to Casparus Mabie — though the county history of 1886 has him buying it the year before rather than building it. During the Revolution it briefly held the British spy Major John André before his execution nearby. Today it is a restored restaurant-tavern with four fireplaces, low beams and live music, run by the same family for nearly four decades.

What the records show

The 1668 is not supported and does not come from the house, which claims a three-hundred-year-old structure: a land deed of 1753 and construction in 1754 are on record, and Orange County's supervisors are documented meeting 'at the House of Casparus Maybe' in 1756. Tavern use from the 1750s is well evidenced. The state licence names the house the Old 76 House, which is what the sign says, and Historic Tavern Inc as the licensee.
