The claim
Opposite the village church in Eilsbrunn, near Regensburg, this Bavarian Wirtshaus has been run by the same family since Andreas Röhrl married the innkeeper's daughter in 1658. Eleven generations on, it still pours local beer under chestnut shade, serves crackling roast pork and keeps a lively calendar of readings and music nights.
What the records show
In 1658 Andreas Röhrl married Susanna Hofmeister, daughter of the innkeeper Georg Hofmeister, so the inn was already there, and his family has kept it ever since; Guinness World Records recognised it in 2010 as the oldest continuously family-run inn. The Bavarian monument list, which protects the house under number D-3-75-199-22, describes an eighteenth-century mansard-roofed building whose core is probably older, inscribed 1665, remodelled about 1839 and lengthened by a gabled range, with taproom fittings of the first half of the twentieth century and a function room of 1902 next door. The 1665 inscription is therefore a date on the fabric rather than a date for the trade, which the marriage of 1658 carries.
