The claim
A café on the place Saint-André, opened in 1739 in a clockmaker's old shop and called the Table Ronde since 1797. Grenoble held twenty thousand people when it started pouring. Its back room served the resistance until the German authorities shut it in February 1944 and arrested the landlady. One family has run it since 1972; it opens at nine and closes at midnight.
What the records show
French Wikipedia, following a local newspaper account of January 2023, records that the master confectioner Caudet bought the clockmaker François Dagonneau's shop on the place Saint-André and opened a café in it in 1739, when Grenoble held twenty thousand people; it was the café Caudet, took the name Flandrin in 1758 and Table Ronde in 1797. The composer Antoine Renard is said to have written the music of Le Temps des cerises here. In the war the back room was a meeting place for the resistance, and the German authorities shut the café on 4 February 1944 and arrested the owner, Marie Pollini, with a number of the regulars. The Boccard family have held it since 1972. No deed or licence has been read behind 1739, so the grade is C. It trades as a café and brasserie from nine in the morning to midnight.
