The claim
A stone medieval house on Burton Street, buttressed and gabled, with flagged floors, beams and tapestries inside and a walled garden behind. Everards beers and a family-run kitchen. It takes its name from Anne of Cleves, whose divorce settlement included Melton Mowbray property, and it has only been a pub since 1996.
What the records show
The pub's own history gives 1384, when the building went up as a house for chantry priests, and Historic England supports that age: mediaeval and later, with a C14 doorway at the rear, C15 buttresses and a C15 stone window. What the pub is candid about is the long gap afterwards. The house was church property to the mid-16th century, briefly Thomas Cromwell's, then a mystery until it became a tea room in the 20th century and was converted to a pub in 1996. So the building is genuinely medieval; the drinking is recent. Historic England's map service dates the listing — entry 1265121, grade II*, designated on 24 October 1950 — and gives the register's name for it, Anne of Cleves House. A house is what the register has always known it as: the designation is forty-six years older than the pub.
